Moir Stakes – 2021

Track: Slow? Weather: Showers

There are eleven acceptors for the $1,000,000 Group 1 Moir Stakes.  Two last ran in the Concorde Stakes at Randwick, two ran here in the Carlyon Stakes a month ago and three ran in the McEwen Stakes on September 4.  Chris Waller has two runners.  The early favourite in the betting is the resuming three year old Profiteer.  He impressed with two dominant wins as a 2 year old and has 52kg on his back for this first up assignment.  Next in the betting is The Inferno.  He let down strongly to win here second up and maps to get a gun run for the in form Damian Lane.

Wild Ruler ran well first up in the Concorde Stakes at Randwick and is another who maps well in this.  September Run closed strongly first up and ran a huge race at Moonee Valley in the William Reid earlier in the year.  Ballistic Lover has won three of her last four starts.  Portland Sky won the Oakleigh Plate in February.  Trekking finished second in this race last year.  Brooklyn Hustle loves racing at Valley, while Swat’s That is one of four resumers in the race.  The remaining runners are longer than $20-1.

1. Trekking

Seasoned campaigner who continues to race well.  He ran a good second in this race last year.  First up was beaten less than three lengths behind Natura Strip.  In the mix here.

2. Wild Ruler

Finished second in the Concorde Stakes at Randwick first up and maps to get a gun run for an inform Daniel Moor.  Soft ground is some query but expecting him to run well.

3. The Inferno

Was a big improver second up to win the Group 2 McEwen Stakes this track and distance.  Has a very strong record – nine wins from eleven starts – and draws well with Damian Lane in the saddle.  Must be respected here.

4. Portland Sky

Talented four year old.  He dead heated in the Oakleigh Plate in February then ran second here in the William Reid over 1200m.  Heavily supported when resuming in the McEwen – looked the winner on the turn before being swamped late.  Fitter here and will have no issues handling soft conditions.

5. September Run

Four year old mare with a strong record.  She won the Coolmore Stud Stakes last spring and finished second in the Lightning Stakes over this distance earlier in the year.  She closed off strongly in the McEwen first up but is going to need luck here from barrier one.  If she gets it she can win.

6. Swat’s That

Resumes.  Has three wins and three placings from nine starts.  Stable / jockey are inform and she is very consistent.  In the mix here.

7. Brooklyn Hustle

Five year old mare first up.  She loves racing this track and distance and ran really well in this race last year.  Has trialled up well and gets the right draw for her.  Over the odds.

8. Ballistic

Sydney trained mare who has been given a month between runs since running down Esta La Roca to win the Carlyon Stakes.  Consider for multiples.

9. Miss Albania

Also comes via the Carlyon Stakes where she was a heavily backed favourite.  She got way too far back there but ran home okay into third.  Not sure where she gets to from the gate here + gets a negative jockey change (Jamie Kah off).

10. Shaquero

Resumer who won the Magic Millions and Pago Pago as a two year old.  His trails have been okay leading in but I would prefer to see him here first up.

11. Profiteer

Exciting three year old resuming.  He was a dominant Flemington winner on debut before bolting in in the Inglis Millennium race at his second start.  Finished seventh in the Golden Slipper at his last start after being sent out favourite.  May of just had enough there.  His recent jump outs have been good and he maps to lead here.  May take plenty of catching with 52kg on his back.
