The race was first held in 2019 as part of the expanded Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. It aims to encourage good horses to remain in Sydney rather than head to the Melbourne Spring Carnival.
It is held the week after The Everest on the same day as the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in Melbourne, and is part of The Everest Carnival. As a set weights race for three-year-olds, it makes a perfect end-of-spring target with its $1 million prizemoney for horses from the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes over 1400m in late September.
The winner of the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes over 1500m held two weeks earlier is exempt from the ballot for this race. In 2020 Peltzer won both races, making him the first horse to complete the double.
From 2021 the $2 million The Invitation for fillies and mares will also be run on the same day.
