The race was first held as a Principal race over 1400m at Caulfield in 1976. It was called the Tranquil Star Stakes and was won by a horse called Better Draw. In 1980 it became a Group 3 race and in 1982 the distance was increased to 1600m then returned to 1400m in 1986. In 1991 the name was changed to the Dalgety Stakes, in 1994 it was called the Inglis Premier Sale Stakes and in 1995 it was the Jewel Stakes. From 1996 onwards it was been called the Angus Armanasco Stakes in honour of the late Australian Racing Hall of Fame trainer. In 1997 the distance increased to 1600m again and in 2000 it was upgraded to a Group 2 race. From 2010 onwards the distance has been the current 1400m.

Interesting trivia: In 1994 Party Time and Sovereign Appeal dead-heated for first.

Winners of past Angus Armanasco Stakes often go on to contest the ATC Australian Oaks.
