Our Canterbury Horse Racing Tips for Fridays New Year’s Day meeting.
The feature race is the Listed Christmas Classic over 1200m (race 6).
Super Contender (Canterbury Race 7 No. 5):
This lightly-raced five-year-old trained by Chris Waller has two wins and three places from six starts. He resumed from a 14 week break for 3.5 lengths 4th over 1200m at Canterbury on 27 November, then kept chasing for 2, 1.3 lengths 3rd over 1100m at Canterbury on 11 December. He won third-up last campaign and looks well-placed here.

Each Way
Bergen (Canterbury Race 8 No. 3):
This five-year-old Your Song gelding trained by John O’Shea has four wins and two places from 14 starts. After a 14 week spell he resumed for 4.8 lengths 8th over 1300m at Rosehill on 20 November, then came from last, peeled six-wide on the turn and ran home strongly for a narrow win in the final stride over 1400m at Kensington on 4 December. That was an impressive run and he looks worth an each-way bet.

Best Lay
Front Money (Canterbury Race 8 No. 6):
This four-year-old mare trained by team Hawkes is the early favourite in this BM 72 handicap over 1100m. She won a F&M BM 64 handicap over 1200m at Newcastle on 1 September before a 13 week spell, then resumed for 1.8 lengths 4th over 1100m at Kensington on 4 December. She hasn’t won second-up before and I am prepared to risk her.

Key Comments The track is a synthetic tapeta-based surface and weather has minimal effect on how it races. The rail remains in the true position. As a general rule, runners who land in the front half of the field are suited at this track, with a slight advantage to those who land forward of midfield and can find a cart into the race from the wider lanes in the straight. Key Comments The best bet is in the first and was explosive on debut. Expecting all to have their chance on this track that usually plays fair. Best Bet What A Cross (Sale Race 1 No. 10) Big finale on debut and looms at likeable odds here. Was smacked in betting then and almost pulled off the plunge when flying to the line. Looks a huge chance here. Check odds on SmartB Analyst: Bryce Parker
