The Robert Sangster Stakes is one of the younger races in Australia. It began in 1983 when it was won by Ranee’s Palace, was a listed race from 1984 to 1985, a Group 3 from 1986 to 2003, a Group 2 in 2004 and a Group 1 from 2005. It has always been run over 1200 metres and was held at Cheltenham in 2002.
Originally known as the Swettenham Stud Stakes, the race was renamed in 2005 to honour legendary thoroughbred owner and breeder Robert Sangster. He was the principal of Swettenhan Stud and passed away in 2004.
Interstate fillies and mares, particularly from Victoria, often target the Robert Sangster Stakes in search of a Group 1 win, as it is a prestigious event for females. Local horses may use the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes over 1100 metres as a lead-up race.

The $400,000 2012 Sportingbet Robert Sangster Stakes has a field of 10, where Black Caviar is a short-priced odds-on favourite as she sets sail for her 20th consecutive win. The undefeated champion sprinter has not started since beating Hay List in the Lightning Stakes on 18 February and trainer Peter Moody reports she is in great shape. Second in the market is Lone Rock who finished 4th in the William Reid Stakes last start and won The Goodwood over this track and distance last year.
Valentine Miss and Sistine Angel are both proven stakes performers and are vying for third favouritism, giving Victorian-trained horses the first 4 places in the market. Power Princess and All Friared Up are both from Western Australia and have both been placed in Group races. Just Sybil is a South Australian mare with a record of 6 wins and 8 places from 18 starts at this track. Shekinaar, Spurcific and Tabulated are currently all over 100 to 1 in the betting. There are no three-year-olds and all runners will carry 56.6 kg. Black Caviar should win easily.
