The Shannon Stakes is a 1500 metre quality handicap race run by the Australian Turf Club in late September. It is run at Rosehill as part of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. The winner is exempt from the ballot for the Epsom Handicap.

Shannon Stakes Race History
The race was first held as a Principal Race in 1978 as the Shannon Quality Handicap over 1500m at Rosehill and was won by a horse called For All Seasons. It was a Listed race fro 1979 to 1984 and became a Group 3 race in 1985. In 1991 it was held at Canterbury Park Racecourse over 1550m. The race was upgraded to it’s current Group 2 status in 2001 and was held over 1400m that year before reverting back to 1500m from 2002 onwards.
