This is the oldest feature race held by the Gold Coast Turf Club and was first raced as the Newmarket Handicap in 1963 when it was won by Emborne, a mare who returned to win the race again in 1964. The first two runnings were held by the Southport & District Amateur Race Club which was renamed Gold Coast Turf Club in 1965. In 1973 the race was renamed the Goldmarket Handicap. At various times it has been held over distances of 1400m, 1300m and 1200m. It achieved Listed status in 1994.

Interesting trivia: The Goldmarket has been sponsored by Carlton & United since 1969, one of the longing sponsorship associations in Australian racing.
