Wangoom Handicap – 2023

Track: Wet Weather: Rain

Sixteen have accepted for the time honoured Wangoom Handicap.  This is normally a great betting race and this year is no different with ten runners under $20-1.  Outlaws Revenge is the current favourite and looks well set up for home town trainer Daniel Bowman.  Taunting won his last start in fast time during the Oakbank carnival.  It’sourtime was a good run against the bias in the Country Discovery Final and looks to find a much better race shape here.  Chief Altony is first up on the minimum.  Frankie Pinot won this race last year while First Accused is up from Tasmania.

1. Frankie Pinot

Won the race last year on a heavy 10 with 55 kgs.  Rises to 60kg this year but has been very good at both runs back from the paddock and should be respected here.

2. It’sourtime

His run in the Country Discovery last start was very good.  Bias was against there and I think he did well to get as close as he did.  My knock on him is it has been a while since he has won but if they are able to make ground this race looks to set up pretty well for him.

3. Outlaws Revenge

Is having second run for Warrnambool trainer Daniel Bowman.  He was five weeks between runs into Sandown last start and ran well for second.  Looks well set up here.

4. First Accused

Tasmanian off a let up.  He gets blinkers on and loves soft ground.  Has form all around The Inevitable who ran a slashing race in the All Star Mile.  Chance.

5. Mnementh  – SCRATCHED

6. Chief Altony

Has been well backed in early betting.  This a trip short of his best but he’s a talent, loves wet ground and is on the minimum.  Tricky horse to assess.

7. Scissor Step

Thought his run with the big weight was okay at Oakbank last start.  Fitter again here.

8. Inn Keeper

Won this race two years ago, came 2nd last year and was 3rd in 2020.  Not sure he is going well enough.

9. Taunting

Found the right part of the track when winning at Oakbank last start.

10. I Am War

Has struggled at his two runs back.  Needs to improve.

11. Belsielle

Place chance at best.

12. Sacred Palace

Lindsey Smith runner who looked the winner at Bendigo last start before El Salto got up inside of him to just beat him.  He can run well again here.

13. Bill The Boxer

Hasn’t been far away at his two runs back.  Ready to peak.

14. Dothraki

Not here.

15. Stripped Back

Was electric winning first up here over 1000m last prep.  This is harder.

16. Port Louis

Arrogant winner last start against easier company.  Wouldn’t be shocked to see him run a race here at big odds.
