The Andrew Ramsden 2021 Preview

Track: Soft Weather: Showers

Ten have accepted for this years Andrew Ramsden.  There are five geldings (one is a 3 year old) four mares and one 3 year old filly.  Two of these had their last run in the Sydney Cup, two ran in the William Newton Handicap here on Anzac Day while the two 3 years olds come via the VRC St Leger.  The leading trainers of stayers, Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, have three runners in the race.  The early favourite in a wide open betting market is Realm Of Flowers.  She has ran well at all four starts this preparation with out winning.  Miami Bound closed strongly into third in the Sydney Cup last time out and returns to her home track where she has two wins and two placings from seven attempts.

Persan was heavily backed last start but failed to let down in a rare bad performance for him, his form prior was very strong.  Grand Promenade is one of the Maher/Eustace runners.  He lead and kicked strongly to win by 2.8 lengths at Sandown on May 1.  This is harder but he is ready to peak fourth up.  Through Irish Eyes won the VRC St Leger last time and is a genuine staying type.  Mohican Heights has finished in the the top two at his last three starts while the filly Salto Angle is Group 1 placed but is also still a maiden.  The remaining runners are longer than $20-1.

The Andrew Ramsden Runner by Runner

1. Constantinople

Former import who is backing up off a run in last weeks Warrnambool Cup.  He put in his best run in 18 months to finish fifth.  Needs to improve further to be a chance here.

2. Grand Promenade

Perfectly rated by John Allan to win a benchmark 84 at Sandown by 2.75 lengths last time.  Up in class and loses that rider here due to suspension which is of concern however should lead or sit handy again in what could be a slowly run race.  Stable is on fire.

3. Persan

Disappointing effort when finishing fourth here as a heavily backed favourite last time.  Form previous was very good and did finish fifth in last years Melbourne Cup.  Has been set for this all along and if you can forgive last start then he is a leading chance here.

4. Mohican Heights

Going well this prep having won at Caulfield two back before finishing second here last time.  However he has a tricky gate to contend with and is poorer off at the weights.  Consider for multiples.

5. Miami Bound

Out and out stayer who won the 2019 Crown Oaks.  She finish off well in the Sydney Cup to run third.  The main concern for her here is the likely slow tempo but she will be running on at the end of it.

6. Realm Of Flowers

Started $6 in the Sydney Cup and did more than enough to work home into fifth after being near enough to last on the fence on the turn.  This is a possible after thought but she is rock hard fit and comes from right camp.  Like the booking of Mark Zahra.  Looks a major player here.

7. Never Listen

Lightly raced mare trained by Peter Moody at Pakenham.  She hasn’t done much since returning off an 18 month break.  Blinkers go on but hard to recommend.

8. Lion’s Share

Beaten favourite in a benchmark 64 at Warrnambool last week.  Is terribly unsuited at weight for age.  This is a huge throw at the stumps.

9. Through Irish Eyes

Three year old son of Tavistock.  He took four starts to break his maiden at Sale.  Since he has finished second in the Galilee Final at Caulfield, and won the VRC St Leger against the three year olds this track/trip last start.  Promising stayer from the right camp!

10. Salto Angel

Is an eleven start maiden however did finish second in last years Crown Oaks!  Finished second in the VRC St Leger Trial last time and can be considered for multiples.
