Grand Prix Stakes 2021 Preview
Track: Good Weather: Fine
There are only seven three-year-olds for the 2021 running of the $250,000 Grand Prix Stakes. There are four geldings and three fillies and five of the runners had their last start in the Eagle Way 3YO Quality Handicap over 2000m at Doomben on 4 December. The short-priced favourite is David Vandyke’s filly Gypsy Goddess who has won all three of her starts including the Eagle Way. Second favourite is Pool Pony who finished 2nd in the Eagle Way. Third favourite is Caboche who has two wins from six stats and was checked and forced wide before finishing 6th in the Eagle Way last outing.
Balmaurice was 4th in the Eagle Way while Sergeant Silva finished 5th. Ironic Miss has finished 2nd at her last two starts, while Star Twinkle has one win from 11 starts and is the outsider of the field at triple figure odds.
2021 Grand Prix Stakes Runner by Runner
1. Caboche
This Vadamos gelding has two wins and a place from six starts. He was a 6.5 length winner of an Eagle Farm maiden on 2 November, then won a 3YO handicap over 1600m at Sunshine Coast on 20 November. Last outing he was checked and forced wide before finishing 6th in the Eagle Way. He is trained by Chris Waller who won this race with The Elanora last year and also won with Mackintosh in 2015, Vilanova in 2013 and Hawkspur in 2012. Forgive his last run and he is one of the main chances here.
2. Sergeant Silva
He has won three of his eight starts and finished 5th in the Eagle Way. He is trained by Robert Heathcote who won this race in 2007 with Bell Academy. Rough chance.
3. Balmaurice
This Maurice gelding trained by Rex Lipp and Nicholas Hahn has a win and two places from 10 starts. He finished 4th in the Eagle Way and could place here.
4. Pool Pony
Stuart Kendrick trains this Shalaa gelding that ran 2nd in the Eagle Way. One of the chances.
5. Gypsy Goddess
This Tarzino filly trained by David Vandyke is unbeaten in three starts. Her first two starts were at the Sunshine Coast , then she won the Eagle Way by 1.2 lengths. Should win.
6. Ironic Miss
She has a win and three places from eight starts and has ran 2nd at her last two starts – an 1850m Class 1 at Newcastle then a 2100m Class 1 at Wyong. Trained by Rodney Ollerton who won this race with Spuruson in 2004 and ridden by Larry Cassidy who won on Order Again in 2016. Not the worst.
7. Star Twinkle
This Worthy Cause filly has won one of her 11 starts. She has been in the second half of the field at her last 5 starts and others have better chances.
