Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes 2022 Preview

Track: Good Weather: Fine

Eight mares have accepted for the final event on the card – the $200,000 Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes.  Trainer Jamie Richards has a strong hand with two runners.  One of those runners is the New Zealand mare Probabeel and she is a short price favourite in the betting.  She is a proven Group 1 performer and will again be partnered by Brett Prebble who won the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes on her in October.

Marboosha has never missed a place first up and was sixth in a recent Randwick trial.  Tom Dabernig’s mare Flying Mascot was a dominant Group 3 winner last preparation.  Rainbiel ran well first up and has a fitness edge on a number of key rivals, while Kahma Lass won the Weekend Hussler here in October.  The remaining runners are longer than $20-1.

Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes Runner by Runner

1. Probabeel

Class mare in the field.  She won the Cockram Stakes here first up in the Spring, then went onto place in the Underwood Stakes before upsetting short priced Zaaki in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes.  Is four wins from five starts at Caulfield.  Clearly the one to beat.

2. Marboosha

Resumes.  Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden.  Was second in the Sheraco at Kembla Grange first up last prep over this distance.  Sixth in a recent trial.  In the mix.

3. Flying Mascot

The progressive mare in the field.  She went to a new level last preparation winning the Tesio Stakes by 4 lengths at Moonee Valley before finishing fifth in the Group 1 Empire Rose over the mile at Flemington.  Will be better over further but is capable of running a place here fresh.

4. Kahma Lass

Second of the Jamie Richards runners.  She let down strongly to win the Weekend Hussler over 1400m here in September.  Another who is likely to be better over further.

5. Rainbiel

Ran well when fourth here in the Christmas Stakes first up.  The winner Marabi was subsequently very impressive winning a Group 2 at Moonee Valley.  Can settle closer here.  Expecting her to run well.

6. Kenyan Wonder

Six year old mare trained by Ryan Balfour at Morphettville.  She likes to get back and run home in her races.  Was fifth in the Listed Durbridge last start.  Place chance.

7. Mariamia

Very unlucky two starts ago, then boxed on well in the Australia Stakes last start at Moonee Valley.  Consider for multiples.

8. What A Smasher

The Noonan’s combine with What A Smasher.  She has a poor win strike rate and her second in a benchmark 70 last start does not read well enough for this.
