Carlyon Stakes – 2021

Track: Slow Weather: Shower or two

There are ten acceptors for this years $160,000 Carlyon Stakes and it promises to be a fast run edition with a number of horses which like to lead entered in the race.  Six have had at least two runs in their current preparation while the remaining four are first up from a spell.  The early favourite in the betting is the Phillip Stokes trained runner Ancestry.  He is unbeaten in three attempts at the “The Valley” and won the Abell Stakes here in March.  Next in the betting is Miss Albania.  She is a last start Flemington winner and gets Jamie Kah in the saddle for the first time.

Ballistic Lover has had a freshen up since her last run in the June Stakes at Randwick.  Spaceboy has finished in the top three in eighteen of his twenty five starts and looks well drawn in barrier four.  Greyworm on the other hand has a tricky draw in barrier ten but gets an inform Craig Williams in the saddle.  Express Pass could be suited by the fast tempo.  Kalkarni Royale is fit and racing well, while Esta La Rocca finished third behind Beau Rossa in the Lightning Stakes at Morphettville last start.  The remaining runners are longer than $20-1.

1. Ancestry

Ancestry has nine wins and a third from eighteen starts and like many of these has plenty of early toe.  He is drawn nine but it wouldn’t surprise to see him able to across if ridden aggressively out of the gate.  If he does cross he will take plenty of getting past.

2. Ashlor

This 8 year old gelding goes really well at this track.  He ran second at Group 2 level here last September before finishing 2.75 lengths off Pippie in the Group 1 Moir Stakes.  Roughie with a chance!

3. Greyworm

Goes well first up but barrier ten looks a really sticky draw for him here.  Happy to risk as a $6 shot in the early markets.

4. Spaceboy

Speedy customer who is trained by Gary Portelli at Wawrick Farm.  He has a habit of running second but ran well last start and I like him drawn inside here with Ben Melham booked.  Can be in the finish at an each way price.

5. Express Pass

Express Pass likes to get back and run on in his races so he could be suited by the fast tempo here.  He stormed home to win at Flemington in 78 grade two back with the big weight.  Each way claims.

6. Ballistic Lover

One of two Sydney trained horses in the race.  He has been given a let up and trial since a sixth place finish at Randwick in the June Stakes.  In the mix here.

7. Queen Annabel

Likes to get back and fly home in her races.  Her recent jump out was good but she might be lacking the class to win here.

8. Kalkarni Royale

Fit and racing well.  She was a strong a winner at Flemington two starts ago and has run well at both starts on this track.  Another who will be suited by a fast tempo.

9. Miss Albania

Comes here off a good win at Flemington and was a winner at her only start this track and distance.  Another who looks to have a bit of a sticky draw in barrier seven but she gets a massive positive jockey change with Jamie Kah going on.  One of the chances.

10. Esta La Rocca

Flying machine who returns to Victoria after running third in the Lightning Stakes in Adelaide.  That form has been franked with both horses that beat her home running well since.  Plenty of speed drawn underneath her is a query if you like her.
