The race was first held over 1200m in 1974 when it was won by a five-year-old called Cambana Lad. In 1975 the distance was increased to 1800m and it was won by Comet Again. The distance returned to 1200m for 1976 and 1977 then was increased to 1400m from 1978 to 1981, In 1982 it returned to the current 1200m distance apart form 1983 and 1985 when it was 1400m.
The race is mainly won by four-year-old geldings and Heron Bridge was the oldest horse to win at nine-years-old. Only three mares and two fillies have ever won this race. When My Bella Mae won in 2023 she was the first filly to win since Pure Gamble in 1980. In 2024 it is being run at Bunbury due to extreme heat forecast at Ascot.
