The race was first run in 1974 and was won by a horse called Citadel. The horse that finished second was Bletchingly who became a champion sire. It became a Listed race in 1979 and then became a Group 3 race in 1986. It was upgraded to it’s current Group 2 status in 2015.

Bobbie Lewis was a jockey who rode over 900 winners between 1892 to 1938. He rode in 33 Melbourne Cups and won four of them and he won 18 Derbies including eight VRC Derby’s.
