Scottish Dancer (Geelong 2 No. 3)
This four-year-old gelding has had six starts for three wins and a place. He chased hard the entire straight to just miss when 0.3 length 4th over 1400m at Flemington on 23 September, then charged clear over the last 50m to win by a length over 1600m at Cranbourne on 11 October. He should be fitter after two runs and looks ready to tackle the longer distance.

How to pick a winner

Each Way

Approach Discreet (Geelong Race 5 No. 6):
This Dawn Approach gelding trained by Adrian McGregor at Cranbourne has four wins and five places from 16 starts. He won by 2.5 lengths  over 1800m at Sandown Hillside on a soft track on 12 August, then raced at the same track and distance for a 0.75 length win on 26 August. He has had an eight-week let-up and drops back in distance and looks a good each-way prospect.

Best Lay

Xilong (Geelong Race 8 No. 1):
This Deep Field mare trained by Tony McEvoy is the early favourite for the Black Pearl Stakes. She has five wins and three places from 11 starts. She finished last campaign with 3.6 lengths 7th in the Group 1 Goodwood over 1200m at Morphettville on 16 May, then resumed after 21 weeks for 3.9 lengths 5th in the Group 3 Northwood Plume Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield on 10 October. Her weight goes up 1kg from that run. She has drawn wide and in a race of many chances does not look like value.
