Alsephina | (Ascot Race 1 No.4)

Nice little competitive race we have in the opener which consists of three last-start winners. One of them was Alsephina who was nothing but impressive on debut, winning comfortably by 1.25 lengths over this track and distance. Three runners from that race have raced since for two wins and a placing, with second placing Born To Talk winning comfortably on ANZAC Day. Our girl is half a kilo better off from that run against Born To Talk and she maps beautifully from barrier two, to sit just behind Born To Talk and My Marlaina. I think she is going to be hard to beat in the opener, let’s just hope we get a backable price.

War Gem | (Ascot Race 5 No.5)

I thought this was a nice race for the son of War Chant third-up. First-up he was mighty impressive, finishing one length behind the winner My Dilemma in third, a race which has produced two metro winners, two metro placings, and a provincial winner. Last start was forgetful as he dwelt at the start and lost two lengths but he really didn’t show a lot in the straight, hence why I think they have taken the winkers off for the first time and put the visors on. He is drawn beautifully and gets Chris Parnham aboard, so I am expecting a much better showing.

Guard The Safe | (Ascot Race 5 No.3)

Despite winning well last start in Class 1, this is Class 3 and much harder and he will have to carry a similar weight. I have him rated much higher than his price due to recent form and ratings and I am happy to risk.

Other Bets

Maximum Impact | (Ascot Race 3 No.5)

This bloke got thrown into the deep end last start but ran boldly in sixth, 4.5 lengths off the winner in Pats Got Sass. Before that he wasn’t far away back in maiden grade, finishing a tight second to True Moon. After running out of grade last start, he comes back to the maiden grade here, he has drawn ideally in barrier one and gets Laqdar Ramoly on, who will claim a vital 1.5kg. There looks to be little speed engaged, so I expect him to travel sweetly and be hard to run down.

0.5 unit @ $11.00 win / 1 unit @ $3.00 place (Rated $3.24)

Money For Old Rope | (Ascot Race 4 No.4)

I don’t mind the former Lindsay Smith trained galloper who is now being trained by Mark Bairstow in Port Kennedy. He brings over form from the East which consists of two seconds at Warrnambool behind Mingora and Prospettiva before finally winning one at Hamilton over the mile. Since coming over, he has had two nice trials in preparation for this and he will have the tongue-tie applied for the first time. He was scratched from Northam on Sunday for this as the draw is much better and he should lead with no speed engaged. Brad Rawiller will be aboard, so I expect a strong ride despite being first-up over the mile.

0.5 unit @ $7.00 win / 1 unit @ $2.30 place (Rated $3.13)

Ground Braker | (Ascot Race 7 No.3) / Shadow Girl | (Ascot Race 7 No.2)

Ground Braker is coming off a solid two-length win over this track, distance, and grade last start, and he will look to make it back-to-back wins despite going up 2.5kg. He has drawn much better to last start and they have an option to lead again or take the sit behind the leaders with very little pace on paper. He should get a gun run throughout and be right in the mix once again. Shadow Girl was formerly trained in the east by Anthony Cummings before heading to Garry White then Terry Croft before heading west to Gary Crispin. On his debut in Western Australia, he was awkward out and laid in in the straight when finishing 1.6 lengths back in fourth over the 1500m. He is up to his ideal distance now of 1800m and he will get the tongue-tie applied again, which is a nice move. I won’t be surprised if Brad Rawiller takes her to the lead or box seats, but either way, she should be in the finish.

Key Comments The track is a synthetic tapeta-based surface and weather has minimal effect on how it races. The rail remains in the true position. As a general rule, runners who land in the front half of the field are suited at this track, with a slight advantage to those who land forward of midfield and can find a cart into the race from the wider lanes in the straight.
