Alan Brown Stakes

This is a new race that was introduced in 2023 to honour the late highly respected former STC and Racing NSW Chairman Alan Brown AM. It is designed as a lead-up to the Group 1 King Charles Stakes, one weeks later.

Lead-up races may include the Group 2 Shannon Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill, the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap over 1400m at Randwick and the Coffs Harbour Cup over 1600m.

The late Alan Brown passed away suddenly in March 2022 at the age of 75, and was active in thoroughbred and greyhound racing.

In thoroughbred racing, Brown held high ranking positions of Racing NSW Chairman and Sydney Turf Club Chairman where he also served as vice-chairman and treasurer. He held roles at the STC from 1983 to 2008 when he was appointed chairman of Racing NSW, a role he held for three years before serving on the board until 2014. Alan was also a former director of the Australian Racing Board and chairman of the Australian Pattern Committee.

In greyhound racing he was appointed as the inaugural Chairman of the Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission (GWIC) and led the fightback when the Mike Baird government attempted to ban the sport of greyhound racing.

He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in June 2019 for his significant contribution to the thoroughbred racing industry.
