National Rugby League

Rugby league was born in Australia in 1908 as a separate competition from rugby union. Following in the footsteps of the UK’s northern union of England, the competition drew elite rugby union players from  New South Wales rugby. Throughout the century, the game grew rapidly, gaining favor with crowds and becoming Australia’s top-level domestic men’s rugby league club competition.

How many teams are in the NRL?

The NRL features 16 teams from 5 regions – 10 from NSW, 3 from Queensland and one each from the ACT, Victoria and New Zealand.

When is the NRL Season?

When is the Regular Season?

The NRL premiership begins in early March after a series of trial matches. Games are held on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays until end of September.

Teams competes against each other throughout the season with 9 teams playing twice, whilst the remaining 6 teams play just once, resulting in each team playing 24 games with 2 byes in the 26 week regular season. There are a total of 192 games.

Teams receive 2 competition points for a win and 1 point for a draw. Byes also receives 2 points. A loss does not get any points. Teams are ranked depending on their total competition points, then match points differential (for and against). At the finale of the regular season, the club which ranked highest on the ladder is declared minor premiers.

When is the Finals Series?

At the end of the regular season, the 8 highest placed teams will have a chance to compete in the finals series. The Finals Series lasts for 4 weeks, with the fourth week being the Grand Final.
