New York Giants vs Carolina Panthers

Monday 19th September – 3 am Sydney time

It’s not a common theme that I will bet on my team, and this could be the only time I bet on them depending on their performance.

Carolina had their hearts broken by a field goal against the Browns, in a game that definitely was a game of two halves, especially for their offence. Baker Mayfield struggled to get any consistency in the first half before a massive improvement in the second put the Panthers in the lead late in the game. Unfortunately, there were too many silly penalties on the defensive side of the ball, that ended up leading to crucial points. They struggled a touch to handle the two-headed running attack of Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb, but really it only led to points due to field position more than anything. Carolina was very good against the pass considering the penalties they gave away, which will be a key here against Daniel Jones because Saquon Barkley isn’t a robot and won’t be able to run all game.

The Giants were in a tight game too, except they were on the better side, winning the game against the Titans with a late field goal. They kept Derrick Henry to 82 yards and 0 touchdowns, but did struggle keeping Tannehill in check. Offensively, they relied on Barkley on the ground, running for a league-high 164 yards and 1 touchdown. Daniel Jones struggled with a mere 166 yards and it was evident that his job is hanging on by a thread.

Carolina needs to eliminate the silly penalties and they will be a 7-10 point better team on the defensive side of the ball. We could see plenty of improvement on the offensive side of the ball with Baker under centre and McCaffrey in the backfield, and although their offensive line has improved, they still need to build on it. Providing they have worked hard with their communication on offence, we should see a more complete performance from the Panthers.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs New England Patriots

Monday 19th September – 3 am Sydney time

I don’t think the bookies have taken this match seriously, as the Patriots are very ordinary at the moment.

They really struggled against Miami and the scoreline really flattered them, and that’s with a 20-7 loss. They struggled in all aspects offensively and didn’t look likely to score at all throughout the game. On the defensive side of the ball, stats flattered them, especially when it reads they kept the run game in check. In reality, Tua was slinging it to his weapons with great success and he didn’t need the run game.

The Steelers had a brilliant tussle against last year’s AFC Superbowl representatives and division rival Cincinnati Bengals, which ended in a field goal win in overtime. Minkah Fitzpatrick and TJ Watt were all over the field in defence, but unfortunately, Watt went off late in the game and will miss this game with a pectoral injury. The defence intercepted Joe Burrow four times, sacked him seven times, and forced two fumbles which will send shivers down Mac Jones spine considering what he faced last week. Offensively, Mitch Trubisky led the team around well and he will only get more consistent with game time. Hopefully they can get their running game going to help him out.

San Francisco 49ers vs Seattle Seahawks

Monday 19th September – 6:05 am Sydney time

The 49ers lost last week in torrential weather, and many are claiming that’s why they lost. Let’s get this straight, the Bears had to deal with it too and they played it better and threw for two touchdowns. They only sacked a running quarterback twice and it was a game that they should have won and performed a lot better considering the way they ended 2021. Deebo Samuel was their only shining light and he ended up doing it on the ground, running for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Seattle weren’t fancied against the Broncos, much like this game. They faced Russell Wilson (who has panels on Trey Lance) and kept him to one touchdown and forced two fumbles defending their own line. Geno Smith was surprisingly good, doing it through the air and on the ground, and that was without big games from the two main wide receivers Metcalf and Lockett. The only query I have is the short turnaround for the Seahawks, but if they can overcome that, they should perform well here.

I think Seattle is a big chance to win this, but let’s look at it logically. It’s a divisional game in San Francisco, this should be a great tight contest. There is no way the 49ers are a 9.5 point better team than Seattle.
