It is the last black-type race of the racing year in Australia.
The race was first held over 1000m at Cheltenham in 1974 when it was won by a horse called Storm Duke trained by Bart Cummings and ridden by Bill Sharp. It was held at that track and distance until 2008, apart from 1982 when it was held over 1000m at Victoria Park. In 2009 it was moved to the current distance and track of 1050m at Morphettville. It has previously been known as the Dermody Stakes and was a Group 3 race that was downgraded to its current Listed status in 2006.
