The race was first held over 10 furlongs (about 2000m) in 1961 when it was won by Valerius ridden by J Thompson and trained by Frank Dalton. The distance was increased to 12 furlongs (about 2400m) from 1965 to 1970 then came back to 10 furlongs for 1971 and 1972 before returning to 12 furlongs in 1972. The race wasn’t held in 1973 and when it returned in 1974 it was at the metric distance of 2400m until 1982 when it was reduced to 2000m then in 2014 it was reduced again to the current 1900m distance

Trainer TJ Smith and his daughter Gai Waterhouse have won an incredible 14 winners between them.

The race is regarded as an early autumn lead-up race for staying types heading for the Sydney Cup.
