Northam Cup – 2022

There is a field of 10 runners for the $150,000 Northam Cup, They are all geldings and range in age from six to nine-years-old. Four runners had their last start in a Rating 78+ Handicap over 1400m at Ascot on 8 October, two in the Group 3 Eurythmic Stakes over 1400m at Ascot on 15 October and two in the Listed Hannans Handicap over 1400m at Kalgoorlie on 29 September. One of the others raced over 1400m on 15 October and the other is first-up after a 29 week spell. Trainers Adam Durrant and Peter Fernie both have two runners.

The early favourite is Staralign who finished 0.6 length 5th in the Hannans Handicap last start.  Second favourite is Marocchino who resumed for 2.1 lengths 6th in the Eurythmic Stakes. Third favourite is Eeyore Wayz who was 0.7 length 2nd at Ascot last start, ahead of 3 other runners in this race. Western Temple finished 11th in the Hannans, but has placed at this track before. and Come Right Back finished 3 lengths 10th when resuming.  The other runners are currently 10 to 1 or longer.

1. True Attraction (4)

This seven-year-old hasn’t shown much in two runs this preparation. He finished last of 10 in the Farnley Stakes then 12th of 14 in teh Eurythmic Stakes. Wait for him to show something.

2. Marocchino (2)

Resumed for 2.1 lengths 6th in the Eurythmic Stakes and should improve second-up.

3. Utgard Loki (9)

One of two runners for Adam Durrant. Resumes after 29 weeks and has gone well at recent trials. Can go well first-up.

4. Western Temple (6)

One of two runners for Peter Fernie.  Finished 11th in the Hannans Handicap last start, but has placed at this track before.

5. Come Right Back (7)

Finished 3 lengths 10th when resuming. Prefer others.

6. Dig Deep (1)

Faded to finish 11th of 12 over 1400m last start. Looking to others.

7. Eeyore Wayz (3)

He was 0.7 length 2nd at Ascot last start, ahead of 3 other runners in this race. Looks one of the main chances.

8. Floyd (10)

Unplaced in all 5 runs this preparation. looking elsewhere.

9. Son Of Bacchus (8)

Goes well at this distance and has placed in both previous runs at this track. Not the worst.

10. Staralign (5)

Finished 0.6 length 5th in the Hannans Handicap last start. One of the key chances.
