From 2020, the Blamey Stakes winner earns a ‘win and you’re in’ ballot exemption for the $5 million Special Conditions All Star Mile  (1600m) in mid-March.

The race was first held as a Principal Race over 1.25 miles (about 2000m) under weight-for-age conditions in 1955 and was won by Prince Cortauld. In 1973 the distance became the current 1600m. In 1979 it was given the current Group 2 status. From 1981 to 1986 it was run as a handicap, then was weight-for-age from 1987 to 1997 before set weights and penalties from 1998. It was held at Sandown in 2007 while work was being done at Flemington.
