Registered as the Stanley Wootton Stakes and previously known as the Carlyon Stakes.

The race was first run in 1988 when it was won by a horse called Special.

It is part of the new Summer Sprint Series in Melbourne and is the last of the four race series. The other races are the Listed Kensington Stakes at Flemington, Listed Christmas Stakes at Caulfield and the Group 3 Standish Handicap at Flemington. Racing Victoria announced the changed programming in late 2021, and prizemoney for all four of these races has been boosted. The winner of this race will be exempt from the ballot for the Newmarket Handicap.
