The 2012 Melbourne Cup has been won by Green Moon, trained by Robert Hickmott at Mt Macedon in Victoria. This was the fourth Melbourne Cup winner for his owner Lloyd Williams, an Australian businessman who won with Just A Dash in 1981, What A Nuisance in 1985 and Efficient in2007.
Second past the post was the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fiorente, having his first Australian start, while third was Jakkalberry, trained by Italian Marci Botti, who has had one start in Australia for 13th of 18 in the Caulfield Cup. The margins were a length by one-and-a-quarter lengths, and the time was 3:20.45.
Glencadam Gold was the leader for much of the race, and there no horses swooping from the back of the field at the finish. Green Moon was a convincing winner, surprising many after a disappointing 7th in the Cox Plate last start when he was sent out as favourite. The last horse to finish was this years ATC Derby winner Ethiopia who finished a long way behind the 23rd horse and was lame in his off hind leg and had an abrasion on his right hip.
There were some dramas before the race when trainer Leon Corstens was fined for administering a herbal hoof oil to Zabeelionaire at6.20 on raceday morning. The horse finished in 22nd place. Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall were present to watch the race and present the trophy.
I hope everyone had a fun and profitable day. Racing returns to Flemington with Oaks day on Thursday and then the final day of the Flemington Carnival is Emirates Stakes day on Saturday 10th November. Happy punting!.
