Rustic Steel (Newcastle Race 7 No. 1)
This four-year-old Deep Field gelding trained by Kris Lees has three wins and a place from five starts. At the end of last campaign he battled away for 1.19 lengths 3rd over 1300m at Hawkesbury on 14 April, then resumed after 12 weeks with a 0.2 length win over 1150m at Kensington on 7 July, where he ran the best last 800m to 200m race sectional. He has won at this track before and looks a leading chance.

How to pick a winner

Each Way

Nicci’s Song (Newcastle Race 6 No. 9):
This four-year-old Nicconi mare trained by Graeme Murray at Kembla Grange has four wins and a place from her eight starts. She was leading before being winded late and finishing 3.33 lengths 5th over 1000m at Canberra on 9 April, then led and kicked away for a 3.26 length win on heavy going over 1000m at Goulburn on 30 July. Should race on the speed and looks a solid each-way bet.

Best Lay

Selburose (Newcastle Race 5 No. 2):
This four-year-old I Am Invincible mare trained by Chris Waller has two places and five places from 12 starts and is the early favourite in this F&M BM 72 handicap over 1200m. She led straightening but was run down late for 0.97 length 3rd over 1300m at Kensington on 7 July, then was run down late for 0.4 length 2nd over 1300m at Randwick on 31 July. Goes up in weight and others offer better value.

Key Comments The 'Bool carnival continues and the feature on the card is the Wangoom Handicap (race 8). Tricky card to sort out but going for the best bet in the feature who is 3/3 on this track and class can come to the fore. Best Bet Tuvalu (Warrnambool Race 8 No. 1) He is 3/3 on this track and form last prep reads well against these including a length loss behind Pinstriped, a length loss behind Alligator Blood and half a length
