Six Nations Round 5

Wales vs Italy

Sunday 20/03/2022, 1:15am AEDST at Principality Stadium, Cardiff, Wales

Wales can only be described as one word this entire tournament: Resilient. They have fought in every game they have played despite being understrength, which will give them the ultimate hope heading into the test matches later this year. They took France to the limit last week with their defensive grit but just couldn’t capitalise in attack. Wales can hold their head up high and I have no doubt that if they were full strength, they would be the ones fighting it out for the title this weekend. Italy will be glad the tournament will be over though they have showed glimpses of what they can be capable of, especially last weekend against Scotland.

Despite being battered and bruised, Wales will hopefully use this as a statement game, as a team to fear in the mid-year test matches.

Ireland vs Scotland

Sunday 20/03/2022, 3:45am AEDST at Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland

Ireland are going to hold on to their slim hopes of winning the Six Nations, and a win against Scotland here will be all they can control. They were brilliant against England last weekend, holding England tryless in their 17 point win. They will be looking for a defensive route against Scotland, who apart from last weekend against Italy, have really struggled in attack. Scotland played well against Italy for the most part but looked a bit lost being so far in-front. After hitting the lead at 33-10, they let in two tries over the final 14 minutes to have the margin cut back to 11.

Ireland will want this win to keep a glimmer of hope and Scotland can attempt to spoil the party, but I think it will be in vain and Ireland should win this comfortably.

England vs France

Sunday 20/03/2022, 7:00am AEDST at Stade De France, Saint-Denis, France

This is the match of the round and a win from France ensures a Grand Slam win for the Six Nations title. Wales took them to the limits last weekend despite starting the game with flair. They let the Welsh change the game to a dog fight, which France proved they were up for. They have a chance to win it all in front of their home fans and winning against England no less will give them further incentive. England only scored one try over their past two matches and if you take away the Italian game, they have scored only two tries in three games. Their attack has lacked poise and consistency, which I don’t see it changing now. They have a long road ahead after this game and coach Eddie Jones is going to need a change of plan if they are going to be competitive with a test match series against Australia later this year.

With the title on the line, in front of their home fans and the lack of English attack, France should win this and win it comfortably. They have played a good tournament and are deserved title winners.
