The US Masters at Augusta
There are a few events scheduled this week for golf punters, but it’s fair to say none will attract the interest of golf punters annually like the US Masters held in Augusta Georgia in the Spring. However this year due of course to Covid, the annual event has been pushed back to the autumn. The week ending the 15th of November in Georgia. What changes will this make to the course? Well firstly it’s normally greener and firmer, but rain predicted daily and thus interfering with cutting suggests slower softer greens. This of course may not happen due to the expensive sub-air warming system installed by the venerable course some years ago. There is however a degree of uncertainty and uncertainty offers opportunity.
In 1935 at the second Masters Gene Saracen holed a three wood for an albatross (double eagle) three at the 15th and went on to win. Rory McIlroy is the only player in the field who can achieve that milestone.Tiger Woods has already achieved that milestone and he won for the fifth time in 2019. Can he do it again? At $50 on Betfair, I’m not ruling him out. The dogs are barking Bryson de Chambeau due to his prodigious length, however his record at Augusta is poor. Brysons greatest attribute is his ability to control the ball from the rough, however there’s none here this week so I feel Augusta’s great design will find him out. He’s a lay at $9
Outsiders don’t win all that often at Augusta, but for the aforementioned reasons I think it’s possible this week. The par fives may not be all reachable due to the different autumn winds and possible rain, so I’m looking for good wedge players.
