The race was first held as a Principal Race over 10 furlongs (about 2000m) in 1961 and was won by a horse called Our Add. In 1973 the distance became 2100m and in 198o it became a Listed race. It was upgraded to Group 3 status in 1986 but returned to the current Listed status in 2006.
