Warrnambool Cup 2021 Preview
Track: Soft Weather: Clear
A capacity field of sixteen runners have accepted for the time honored Warrnambool Cup. Maddie Raymond and the Ciaron Maher / David Eustace stable both have three runners in the race, while Symon Wilde has two runners. Three of these had their last start in a 2400m Handicap at Caulfield while three others come via the Terang Cup. One of those runners is Heart Of Puissance and he is the early favourite in the betting. He got a long way back there but hit the line strongly and has been set for this. Next in the betting is Home By Midnight. He too ran in the Terang Cup where he finished second and was an eye catching run back to the inside.
The top weight Le Don De Vie ran well in last years Geelong Cup. Wentwood is one of the locals and was the winner of the Terang Cup. Hard ‘n’ Tough lead all the way to win the Stawell Cup last start – and his trainer Symon Wilde is going for the Wangoom / Warrnambool Cup double. Declares War is fit and racing well. Moonlight Maid ran fifth in last years South Australian Derby and looks ready for this trip. Gallic Chieftain hasn’t won for a while but will appreciate getting to 2400m, while South Pacific and and Sky Horse are both trained by the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace. The remaining runners are longer than $20-1.
Warrnambool Cup Runner by Runner
1. Le Don De Vie
Well supported in the Easter Cup at Caulfield a month ago but weakened out after setting a strong tempo. He ran a slashing race in the Geelong Cup last year. If he can find that form he will be in the finish here.
2. Constantinople
Went off favourite and was unluncky in the 2019 Caulfield Cup but has really battled since. Can’t recommend off recent form.
3. Gallic Chieftain
Won this race in 2018. Has had two runs back from a spell and is getting to a trip now that suits and the blinkers go on. Each way hope.
4. Home By Midnight
Found the line very strongly when finishing second in the Terang Cup last start and drops significantly in weight here. Drawn to get a perfect run from barrier eight. Leading chance.
5. Wentwood
Has taken out the Terang and Werribee Cup’s in the last six months. Damian Lane has a terrific affinity with him and he is another who drops significantly in weight here. Expecting him to run well on his home track.
6. Blenheim Palace
Import deep into his first Australian prep. Get’s to his home track but has been fairly plain at his last two. Needs to improve.
7. Dabiyr
Former Chris Waller runner now with Lindsey Smith. His best would be good enough but he has struggled in recent times. Perhaps the stable change can help turn his fortunes around?
8. Declares War
Won the Wangaratta Cup three back. He is rock hard fit and racing well. Consider for multiples.
9. Hard ‘n’ Tough
Won the Colac Cup in February and the Stawell Cup last start. Gets onto his home track here and should get a soft run from an inside gate. Dean Yendall sticks.
10. South Pacific
South Pacific improved second up where he made good ground from back in the field at Caulfield. Like that he’s had a run over 2400m and gets Jye McNeil. In the mix.
11. Moonlight Maid
Ridden further forward last time at Caulfield and battled on okay to finish fourth. Has always shown good ability. Stepping to 2400m could be the key to her.
12. Heart Of Puissance
This looks the target race for him. He blew them away at benchmark level at Warwick Farm on a wet track two starts ago. Was unsuited last start in the Terang Cup but still finished off well. Comes from the right camp. May just need a touch of luck from the inside.
13. Thunder Cloud – SCR
14. Vee Cece – SCR
15. Sky Horse
Four year old daughter of Tavistock who is a long way up in class here but gets the blinkers on for the first time and Jamie Kah to ride. Knock out hope and one for multiples.
16. Bureaucrat
Been racing in much weaker class. Unlikely.
