W W Cockram Stakes 2020 Preview

Track: Soft   Weather: Fine

There is a field of 15 runners for the $160,000 Group 3 WW Cockram Stakes and 11 of them are having their first-up run for the season. The early favourite is Rubisaki who won all 6 races last campaign including a Group 2 and two Group 3 races. Second favourite is Bless Her who has won all 5 of her starts this campaign. Third favourite is Perfect Jewel who is a star over in Western Australia where she has raced in Group 3 races at her last 3 starts for 2 wins and a place.

Pretty Brazen resumes here and was second in Group races at her last two starts. Madam Rouge resumes after finishing last campaign with a close 2nd in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap. She Shao Fly finished 3rd in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes at this track and distance two weeks ago. Street Icon has had one race and is generally strong second-up. Missile Mantra looked really good in a recent trial win at Randwick, while Felicia goes well first-up. All other runners are currently 20 to 1 or longer.

2020 W W Cockram Stakes Runner by Runner

1. Rubisaki

She resumes after an 19 week break and won all 6 races last campaign. Her career record is 8 wins and 2 second-places from 10 starts. She had the best overall race sectionals when she won the Group 2 P J Bell Stakes over 1200m at Randwick by 1.5 lengths on 4 April , then she fought hard for a 0.2 length win in the Group 3 James HB Carr Stakes over 1400m at Randwick on 18 April. Rates highly and will fight out the finish.

2. Pretty Brazen

Last campaign she finished 2nd in the Group 3 The Vanity over 1400m at Flemington, then was 1.25 lengths 2nd in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes over 1400m on 7 March. Resumes here after a 25 week spell and goes well first-up.

3. Madam Rouge

At the end of her last preparation she nearly won a Group 1 when she hit the front at the 200m but was run down near the post for 0.2 length 2nd in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handcap, She has won two races first-up and has to be considered a danger.

4. Perfect Jewel

This mare from Western Australia won the Group 3 Belmont Sprint over 1400m on 30 May, the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes over 1600m on 13 June and came second in the Group 3 Strickland Stakes on 27 June. She has had a nine week let-up and will go well fresh. One of the chances.

5. Broadwayandfourth

Three starts back she won a fillies race over 110om at Caulfield on 30 May, but has disappointed in two runs since. Not the worst.

6. Meuse

This Snitzel mare has won 4 of her 8 starts. She won the Listed Laelia Stakes over 1600m at Morphettville on 4 April then was 6 lengths 11th in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes over 1800m at Morphettville on 18 April. Resuming here from a 19 week spell she has won 2 of her 3 first-up starts and is better than the current odds of $61 suggest.

7. Fidelia

She hasn’t won in 6 trips to Caulfield before and is better over longer. Looking elsewhere.

8. Missile Mantra

Last campaign all four of her starts were in Group company and she didn’t get a win. In late July she had a good win in a Randwick trial with Hugh Bowman riding and may come back strong after a 22 week break from racing.

9. She’s A Thief

She likes Caulfield and she likes this distance, with 2 wins and 2 places from her last four starts here in mares handicaps. Rough place chance.

10. Clarice Cliffs

Last campaign she had seven starts and ran well in every one of them. She finished with a 1.5 length win over 1400m at Caulfield on 18 April and resumes after a 19 week break. Has the speed to overcome her wide barrier and is not without a hope.

11. She Shao Fly

This mare followed 5th in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield on 25 July with 3rd in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield on 15 August. Not the worst.

12. Bless Her

She has had 5 races this start and has won all of them as she progressed through a maiden plate, class 1, fillies and mares BM70, 3YO fillies race and a mares handicap over 1100m at Caulfield that she won by 2 lengths. She has done everything that’s been asked of her and is one of the main dangers.

13. Jamaican Hurry

This mare has won 5 of her 17 starts and resumes from an 11 week let-up. She usually needs a couple of runs to reach her best and is unlikely to be in the finish here.

14. Street Icon

Her record at Caulfield is poor so she is unlikely to change that in this race.

15. Felicia

She is the most lightly-raced mare in the race with 7 starts for 3 wins and 3 places. Resumes from a nine week let-up after winning a 3YO fillies handicap by 3.75 lengths over 1200m at Caulfield on 27 June. Could surprise.
