W J Healy Stakes 2021 Preview

Track: Soft-Heavy Weather: Rain

Fifteen have accepted for the final race on the card – the $175,000 Listed W J Healy Stakes.  Baller is an early scratching.   Four had their last start in the Hinkler Handicap, three ran in the Lightning Handicap, two ran in the Dane Ripper Stakes and two others ran in the Moreton Cup.  Team Snowden and team Maher & Eustace have two runners each.  The early favourite in a wide open betting race, is one of the Maher & Eustace runners – Away Game.  She ran well here first up and won her only start on heavy ground.  Next in the betting is Usmanov.  He has won his last two starts and is also unbeaten on heavy going.

Jen Rules is always competitive at this level and draws a lovely marble for Rachael King.  Bella Nipotina is one of three horses in the race to have had a stable change since their last run.  Exhilarates won here two starts ago and gets Hugh Bowman on for this.  Hightail is first up.  King Of Hastings looks set to peak third up.  Zaniah has shown she loves racing at this track.  Hail Manhattan loves wet ground.  Doctor Zous has a tricky draw but has returned in good order.  Inanup is now trained in Queensland while Hilo is a very capable galloper on his day.  The remaining runners are longer than $20-1.

W J Healy Stakes Runner by Runner

1. Baller  – SCRATCHED

2. Usmanov

Lead and dictated to win here over 1000m last time.  Prior he scooted around the Gold Coast to win a 900m race.  Will have no trouble with the rain affected going however the 1200m has to be a query if you like him.

3. Exhilarates

Blinkers come off.  He scored this track and distance two starts ago when running strong closing splits.  The booking of Hugh Bowman looks a positive as does the drop back to 1200m.  One of the each way chances.

4. Redouble

Former Bjorn Baker galloper who is first up for a new stable.  Does tend to race well first up and has form on rain affected tracks.  Consider for multiples at a big price.

5. High Tail

Hightail has had a short break since finishing third in the Hareeba Stakes at Mornington.  Another who goes well first up and the booking of Tommy Berry is a positive.  In the mix.

6. Away Game

Talented filly who was heavily backed here first up.  She lead on a day where it wasn’t that advantageous to do so but was still able to hold on for third.  Should derive good benefit from that and has a good second up record – likely to make her own luck from the front again.

7. Zaniah

Get back runner who was placed here behind Baller at Group 2 level last start.  Likely to be giving them a decent start but if she can get a decent cart into the race is not with out a chance.

8. King Of Hastings

This four year old gelding trained by the Freedmans should be set to peak here third up.  He wasn’t beaten far in the wrong section of the track last start and knows how to win.

9. Jen Rules

Struggles to win but is always competitive against this sort of company.  She maps to get a lovely run from barrier seven and is in with a chance here.

10. Hail Manhattan

Ran on okay from the back first up.  The extra distance helps here and he loves racing with the sting out of the track.  Roughie with a chance.

11. Hilo

Former Godolphin galloper.  He is capable of producing a powerful turn of foot on his day and will appreciate these conditions.  Wouldn’t shock to see him in the finish.

12. In Good Time

This six year old mare has been just fair in her two runs back.  Does have a good third up record but she needs to improve.

13. Inanup

Change of stable since finishing eighth at Randwick in late May.  Wetter the better but not sure the inside draw suits him here.

14. Doctor Zous

Has missed a place just once from six attempts on rain affected going and wasn’t all that far away first up.  If they ride him forward from the wide gate he is capable of featuring in the finish.

15. Bella Nipotina

Interesting stable change for this filly moving from the Hayes partnership to the Maher and Eustace partnership.  She has always shown plenty of ability but has struggled to win (1 from 17) – it wouldn’t shock to see her run well here.
