Tontonan Stakes – 2020

Track: Wet    Weather: Rain

Super Titus has been scratched which leaves a field of 14 for the $140,000 Tontonan Stakes.  Many had early favourite Windstorm in their black book after a strong finished two weeks ago at Caulfield.  Regular jockey William Pike hops back aboard here and will wear those famous cerise and white silks of owner Bob Peters.  Yulong January and Bumper Blast are the other two horses under the $10-1 mark – both are looking to bounce back after average performances at their latest starts.

Travimyfriend has been up for a while but continues to race well.  Romancer and Iconclasm both love the Flemington circuit.  Morvada creates some interest making the trip across from Adelaide.  The remaining runners are longer than $20-1.

1. Kiwia

He has come up big odds in early markets.  Needs further.

2. Furrion

Resuming off a win in the listed Warrnambool Cup.  Has the ability to sprint well fresh and likes the cut out.  Barrier 2 is a potential negative if the ground closer to the fence is inferior.

3. Iconoclasm

Fitter now 3^rd up but his record is better on top of the ground.  Think he is well enough found in early markets.

5. Tshahitsi

Stuck on okay first up in a good form race.  Fitter now and will have no issues with a wet track.  Also gets the services of Ben Melham who is at the peak of his powers.  Can run a race here at good odds.

6. Inverloch

Will be using this as a fitness builder – look for him over further.

7. Kentucky Breeze

Resuming at big odds.  He does his best racing over further but should get a nice run and it wouldn’t surprise to see him run a race here.

8.Super Yulong

Was well in the market at Caulfield but faded late off a wide run.  A few things in his favour here that may see him improve – tounge tie, winkers on and a softer track.

9. Romancer

Has had a short break since an impressive win here over the 1600 metres.  A number of horses have come out of that race and run really well.  Expecting him to run well and he looks over the odds in early markets.

10. Morvada

Morvada beat home Dalasan in Adelaide last start which reads well for this.  This looks perfect for him 3^rd up.  Will push forward and make his own luck.

11. Bumper Blast

Loved his win first up down the Flemington straight over an unsuitable distance.  He then went to Caulfied where he started well in the market in the Regal Roller Stakes but disappointed.  Appears to be crying out for the extra distance which he finds here and back to Flemington will suit.

12. Travimyfriend

Looked the winner at Caulfield before a good horse in Showmanship collared him late.  Fit, honest and can handle all conditions.  He will run well again.

13 Adelaide Ace

He’s a group horse on his day but has disappointed in his last two.  Hard to recommend off that first up effort but I am wary that he could improve sharply.

14. Windstorm

It was hard not to be impressed with Windstorm’s effort first up – he got a long way back and worked home very nicely.  That was a perfect fitness builder.  He Drops in weight here and Pike hops back aboard.  Clearly the one to beat.

15. Mount Tabora

He started big odd first up and tired late off a wide run.
