The Goodwood – 2022

Track: Good  Weather: Partly Cloudy.

Twenty-one runners have accepted for the $502,250 Group 1 Goodwood with one of them being an emergency and there has been one early scratching. The Tony & Calvin McEvoy stable, Will Clarken stable, and the Mick Price/Michael Kent Jnr stable have two runners entered each for the event whilst every other trainer has just one entry each.

Extreme Warrior has opened the early favourite in a wide-open race following his nice win in the Bel Esprit Stakes first-up. He is aiming to be the first three-year-old since 2011 and the first three-year-old colt/gelding since 2006 to win this race. In The Boat is on the next line of betting on the back of two really nice wins at Moonee Valley and Sale.

Behemoth rounds out the top three in the betting after a luckless sixth in the D C McKay Stakes, where he flashed to the line carrying 62kg.

Savatoxl is looking to be the first horse since 1912 and just the third horse in history to win multiple Goodwood’s, after winning this race last year.

Luckless last start. Knowing his past and the stable, he will be up to the mark for this one and he has drawn beautifully. He is a live chance.

2. Savatoxl (7)

Looking to win back-to-back Goodwood’s here. He was very brave in the D C McKay Stakes and he looks to be near his fighting best. A win wouldn’t surprise.

Flew home in the D C McKay Stakes coming from near last. Drawn beautifully here and will be doing his best work late. Big chance.

5. Beau Rossa (21)

Disappointing last start in the D C McKay Stakes. Going to need to improve majorly, especially from the draw.

6. In The Boat (20)

Drawn poorly but stable want him drawn to the outside. Was very good at Sale winning by 2.75 lengths. Could give these some trouble.

7. Instant Celebrity (17)

Blinkers on first-time. Will need to be better to be a chance.

8. The Astrologist (6)

Prior to his last start at Caulfield he had been racing in Group 1 company and running well. Could be a chance, place.

9. Halvorsen (2)

Was good two runs ago, finishing second in the William Reid. Too far back last start. Could be a sneaky chance with a favourable draw.

10. Free of Debt (4)

Won the D C McKay Stakes in nice fashion but this looks a lot harder.

11. Regardsmaree (1)

Going for three wins in a row. Also entered at Flemington on the same day. In form but will need to improve.

12. Ironclad (16)

Blinkers and tongue-tie on first time. Ran okay last start but I expected better. Doubtful.

13. Lombardo (19)

Good at Caulfield last start but looks outclassed, especially with the draw.

14. Outlaws Revenge (9)

Can’t have.

15. Bella Nipotina (15)

Finished off the race well last start against harder company but she has drawn poorly. Place chance.

16. Aysar (12)

Has class but needs further.

17. Not An Option (5)

Looks too hard.

18. Frankie Pinot (10)

Going to need a master ride to have a chance.

19. Extreme Warrior (13)

Progressive horse who has beaten some nice horses. Drawn okay, Jamie Kah remains aboard and has no weight. Live chance.

20. General Beau (14)

Looked to have his chance last start and failed. Prefer others.
