Sires Produce Stakes 2021 Preview
Track: Good Weather: Fine
Fourteen two year-olds are set to line up for the $200,000 Group 2 Sires Produce Stakes – most of these are having their first try at 1400m which is almost a staying test for the two year-olds. There are twelve colts in the field, one gelding and one filly. Three of these had their last start in Sydney while two had their last start in the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield.
The early favourite in the betting is the Peter Moody trained Lightsaber. He is a strong colt and comes here off the back of two good wins at Sandown. Pauele finished down the track in the Silver Slipper first up but was well fancied in the betting. Perhaps a firmer track will be more to her liking. Kooled debuted at Canterbury on February 19 and finished off his race strongly, William Pike takes the ride on him.
Readily Availabull made up good ground to win the Ballarat Magic Millions Classic on debut and looks like a colt who will appreciate 1400m. Hitotsu ran tenth in the Blue Diamond but was only beaten five lengths. Cheerful Legend broke his maiden status at Moonee Valley last start. Daily Bugle impressed on debut at Pakenham and then lost the compass around the turn at Sandown. Wolves didn’t have the best of luck in the Blue Diamond and if ridden cold can have last crack at them here from a wide draw, while Saif won a Ballarat maiden on debut. The remaining runners are longer than $20-1.
Sires Produce Stakes Runner by Runner
1. Readily Availabull
Like the way he lengthened to win the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic at Ballarat in October. He got too far back first up but was good late and has had a tick over trial since his last run. The negative is barrier 14 but if there is a speed on he is capable of finishing over the top.
2. Paulele
She won her first two starts before being sent for a spell. I thought her Silver Slipper run was fairly plain, not sure what to do with her.
3. Lightsaber
Raced 3 wide without cover but was still far too good when breaking his maiden at Sandown at the start of February. Then found the lead and kicked strongly to win by 2.25 lengths on February 17. Think it’s a big tick that he had his last start over 1400m.
4. Cheerful Legend
Rounded them up fairly comfortably at Moonee Valley last start. Should get a nice enough run here from barrier 4. In the mix.
5. Daily Bugle
Funny old run at Sandown. Lost the compass around the turn and then loomed as if he was going to go straight past Lightsaber and died on his run. Solid debut win prior at Pakenham.
6. Saif
Was able to score narrowly in a Ballarat maiden on debut. That was Craig Williams only ride for the day which is a good indication that he has an opinion of this gelding.
7. Micro
Yet to win from 4 attempts. Hasn’t shown enough.
8. Pounding
The second of Peter Moodies runners. Hard to recommend off what he has done so far.
9. Kooled
Kept coming at Canterbury first up – he ran second after getting a fair way back in the run. A bigger track and 1400m could work in his favour.
10. Hitotsu
Was making steady ground on debut and then was okay in the Blue Diamond. Racing like a filly looking for 1400 which she gets here.
11. Alegron
Finished 10 lengths astern of the Golden Slipper favourite, Profiteer, on debut here in December. Prefer to watch him first up.
12. Forgot You
Trialed up well before running third at Ballarat on debut. Capable of improving.
13. Guardian Spirit
Debuted in the same Ballarat maiden as Forget You. He closed off okay but clearly this is harder.
14. Wolves
Copped a bump or two at a key stage when she was looking to build the revs on the turn in the Blue Diamond. She got going again and was hitting the line nicely late. If Jye McNeil can find some cover from barrier 12 it wouldn’t surprise to see her in the finish.
