Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2022 Preview
Track: Soft Weather: Cloudy
There is a full field of 16 runners plus 4 emergencies for the $1,000,000 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and they come from many different form lines. Four of them had their last start over 1400m at Caulfield on 27 August, two in the Memsie Stakes, two in the Leon Macdonald, two in the Chautauqua Stakes, two in the Bobbie Lewis and two in The Stradbroke Handicap in June. Four runners are first-up, eight are second-up, six are third-up and two have had multiple runs this campaign.
There are 13 geldings, five stallions and two mares with 3 four-year-olds, 6 five-year-olds, 9 six-year-olds and two seven-year-olds. Trainers Danny O’Brien and Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr both have three runners while Michael Moroney and Anthony & Sam Freedman both have two runners.
The early favourite is former New Zealander I Wish I Win who impressed at his Australian debut with a four length win over 1400m at Caulfield. Second favourite is Ayrton who hasn’t started since June but has won all four of his first-up starts. Third favourite is Tuvalu who resumes after 11 weeks and won three from four last campaign.
Showmanship has eight wins and a place from 10 starts and is unbeaten in four races at this distance. Dragon Leap impressed when running on for 4th in the Memsie Stakes, while Chaillot hasn’t started since May and has won four of five first-up starts. All other runners are currently 20 to 1 or longer.
2022 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Runner by Runner
1. Dalasan (11)
Won the Leon Macdonald Stakes on 27 August, giving his trainer a win in the race named in his honour. Always runs well but has raced at Group 1 level 19 times and never won (but has placed on 4 occasions).
2. Laws Of Indices (7)
Hasn’t raced since June and has never won first-up. Don’t think that will change here.
3. Sinawann (3)
Finished 6th in the Regal Roller Stakes when resuming, but tends to improve sharply second-up.
4. Callsign Mav (12)
Has won three Group 1’s in New Zealand. Resumed for 4.6 lengths 6th in the Memsie Stakes.
5. I Am Superman (19)
Loved the way he ran on strong to finish a close 2nd to Mr Brightside in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes. Has a horror barrier to contend with though.
6. Just Folk (5)
Finished 2nd in the Leon Macdonald last start, but this is much stronger.
7. Graceful Girl (1)
Has drawn the inside barrier and was a magnificent 2.9 length winner of the Winterbottom Stakes at her only previous Group 1 start. Has had two runs in Melbourne this campaign and third-up she is one of the chances.
8. Ayrton (4)
Resumes here and has won all four of his first-up starts. Has six wins from 10 starts but they have all been easier races than this. In the mix.
9. Hilal (20)
The outside barrier is no help. Looking elsewhere.
10. Showmanship (10)
He has eight wins from 10 starts but has never raced a Group 1 or Group 2 level. Last start he won the Show County Quality at his first Group 3 race. Has won at his only previous visit to Caulfield and is unbeaten in four starts at this distance. Capable of giving this a shake and think he can be in the finish.
11. Red Can Man (17)
Western Australia raider who has been given a visitor’s draw. Finished a length 4th in the Bobbie Lewis last start and will find this tough.
12. Buffalo River (16)
Likes to lead but will have to work hard to find the front from the wide barrier. Not the worst.
13. Aysar (9)
Won the Chautauqua Stakes last start and ran last of 9 in the PB Lawence the start before. Has talent but is unpredictable and hasn’t won beyond 1300m.
14. Bankers Choice (18)
Went well in the autumn but his first-up run was ordinary.
15. Tuvalu (13)
Has seven wins and four 2nds from 11 starts. This is his first Group race. He finished last campaign with a 2 length win in the Listed Winter Championship Final over 1600m at Flemington on 2 July. Has finished 2nd to I’m Thunderstruck twice. Resumes here and has never run a bad race. oping he goew well.
16. Chaillot (6)
Resumes here and has won 4 from 5 first-up starts. Drawn well and could place.
17. Dragon Leap (15) – 1st Emergency
New Zealand runner that chased solidly for 4th behind Snapdancer in the Memsie. Could surprise.
18. I Wish I Win (14) – 2nd Emergency
Was a 4 length winner at this track and distance last start but up in grade. Finished last campaign with 1.3 lengths 3rd in A Group 1 race in New Zealand. One of the key chances.
19. Age Of Chivalry (8) – 3rd Emergency
Prefer others
20. Open Minded (2) – 4th Emergency
Finished 5 lengths 3rd behind I Wish I Win last start, Prefer others.
