Queensland Guineas 2021 Preview

Track: Soft-Heavy Weather: Rain

The early scratchings of Mass Destruction and Sagacious leaves a field of eight runners for the Group 2 Queensland Guineas.  There is plenty of rain forecast on Friday and Saturday in Brisbane so there is a good change they will be racing on a severely rain affected track.  There are four Queenslanders and four New South Wales raiders in this years field.  Chris Waller is the only trainer with multiple runners.  The early favourite in the betting is Private Eye.  He hit the line strongly at Randwick last time and is unbeaten in heavy conditions.  The second favoruite is Apache Chase.  This son of Better Than Ready likes to lead in his races and has an impressive Eagle Farm record.

Holyfield failed first up at Randwick but is unbeaten at two previous second up runs.  Tumbler Ridge is a last start winner and trained on the track.  Rollinwiththeflow has finished in the top three in five of his six runs on rain affected tracks while Kukeracha has won here before and has proven himself at the distance.  The remaining runners are $20-1 or longer.

Queensland Guineas Runner by Runner

1. Apache Chase

All four of his wins have come at this track including last start when he won the Listed Daybreak Lover by 2.75 lengths.   Looks the likely leader and if he can run out a strong 1600m is a major player here.

2. Holyfield

Sydney sider who won the Ming Dynasty at Rosehill in the spring.  He was wide at Randwick first up but disappointed finishing tenth beaten over eight lengths.  Needs to improve.

3. Mass Destruction – SCR

4. Private Eye

This son of Al Maher has won five of his eight starts.  He hit the line well behind Ellsberg last time and should get a good run from barrier six.  Looks set to peak third up at 1600m and is two from two on heavy tracks.

5. Tumbler Ridge

Sat outside the lead and kicked clear to notch up the first win of this campaign last time.  In the mix.

6. Rollinwiththeflow

Rollinwiththeflow is another that knows how to win having won five of eleven starts.  Try’s 1600m for the first time but should be fit enough.

7. Bucharest

Hasn’t figured at his last two starts but that was in Group 1 company.  Comes back to 1600m here after having a month off and is drawn well.   Waller and Bowman combine.

8. Kukeracha

Another of the Waller runners.  He was a winner here on Boxing Day but has been plain at his last two starts.  Needs to improve.

9. Sagacious – SCR

10. Be Water My Friend

The least experienced horse in the racing having had just six starts.   He is likely to be getting back from barrier two which could mean traffic problems. Distance a query as well?
