Moir Stakes 2020 Preview
Track: Good Weather: Showers
There are 13 runners for the $1,000,000 Moir Stakes and six of them are resuming from a let-up or spell. Four of them had their last start in the Group 2 Mitty’s McEwen Stakes on 5 September. one in the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality on 12 September, one in the Group 3 The Heath on 29 August and the other in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes on 15 August. The early favourite is Western Australian mare Fabergino who has 9 wins from 12 starts and has won all 7 of her previous first-up starts. Second favourite is another mare Bella Vella who won the McEwen Stakes over 1000m when resuming. Third favourite is Pippie who resumes here and won the Oakleigh Plate first-up last preparation.
Away Game is a three-year-old filly who won four of her eight starts as a two-year-old including the Magic Millions. Trekking has already won two Group 1 races but has never won at a distance shorter than 1100m. Diamond Effort won The Heath last outing to bring up her fifth consecutive win, while Jungle Edge does his best on rain-affected going and his chances will be determined by the track condition at race time. All other runners are currently 15 to 1 or longer.
2020 Moir Stakes Runner by Runner
1. Trekking
He has won 10 of his 29 starts, but is yet to win at a distance shorter than 1100m. He won the 1200m Group 1 Goodwood in Adelaide on 16 May then finished 2.6 lengths 9th in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap on 6 June. He resumes here following a trial win at Rosehill and has a powerful finish.
2. Hey Doc
This seven-year-old gelding hasn’t raced since 9th in the Orr Stakes in February, but goes well at this track with 3 wins from 5 starts here, including the Group 1 2017 Manikato Stakes over 1200m.
3. Jungle Edge
Two starts back he won the Sir John Monash Stakes on a heavy track, and all his wins have been on soft or heavy going. There are showers predicted, and the more rain there is the better his chances will be.
4. Ashlor
He was narrowly beaten in the McEwen Stakes this track and distance last start and has a good record here. He can handle all types of going and is not the worst.
5. Bold Star
Resumed for 0.5 length 4th in The Heath, then was 1.5 lengths 6th in the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality last start. Has not won at Group level before, and looking to others.
6. Bella Vella
This Commands mare won all three races last preparation, including the Group 1 TAB Classic over 1200m at Morphettville. She resumed for a narrow win in the McEwen Stakes where she chased hard and strong late to get up on the line. I like this mare a lot and expect her to be in the finish.
7. Pippie
Resumes here and is unbeaten in three first-up runs including the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate first-up last preparation. One of the main chances.
8. Diamond Effort
Won all four runs last preparation then resumed for a win in The Heath. She hasn’t tackled Group 1 or Group 2 company before but has to be considered a chance.
9. Fabergino
Western Australian mare who has won nine of her 12 starts. She won the Listed Bob Hoysted Handicap in February and the Group 3 Northam Stakes in May, She resumes here after 20 weeks and has won all seven of her previous first-up starts, but all her wins have been on good going and there are showers predicted. She is a very smart mare but I think she is vulnerable here.
10. Brooklyn Hustle
He has two wins at this track and distance and finished 3rd in the McEwen Stakes at this track and distance at his latest start. Not the worst.
11. Hanseatic
Won the Blue Diamond Preview and the Blue Diamond Prelude before being runner-up in the Blue Diamond Stakes in February. Resumed for a length 4th in the McEwen Stakes.
12. Away Game
As a two-year old she won the Magic Millions and was the Golden Slipper runner-up. This will be her first race as a three-year-old and she is one to keep an eye on.
13. Bella Nipotina
She resumed with a two length win in the Quezette Stakes , which was her first ever win at start number eight.
