The McEwen Stakes is a 1000 metre weight-for-age race run by the Moonee Valley Racing Club at Moonee Valley. It is held in early September at the start of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

McEwen Stakes 2020 Preview
Track: Good Weather: Fine
There are nine runners for the $200,000 McEwen Stakes and five of them are resuming from a spell. The early favourite is three-year-old Hanseatic who has won three of his five starts and is resuming after 24 weeks following 10th in the Golden Slipper. He has a big drop in weight and is in with a good chance. Second favourite is Brooklyn Hustle who won by 3.5 lengths in a BM 78 at this track and distance on 1 August. Third favourite is Bella Vella who is resuming from an 18 week spell after winning the Group 1 TAB Classic. She has a top record at Moonee Valley and will be hard to beat.
Bons Away finished 2nd in this race last year behind Faatinah and resumes here. Witherspoon has had three wins from eight attempts this campaign and goes down in weight. Rulership finished 3rd in The Group 3 Vain Stakes before 3rd at Caulfield again last start. Despatch resumes from a 26 week break and is a proven first-up runner winning in three of five attempts but has plenty of weight, while Ashlor and Fine Dane both have good form at Moonee Valley.
