Manfred Stakes 2023 Preview

Track: Good Weather: Warm

This is a cracking edition of the Group 3 Manfred Stakes with the Golden Rose winner Jacquinot headlining the acceptances.  He has come up an odds on favourite and will jump from barrier two with Damian Lane in the saddle.  Ruthless Dame, Angry Skies, Watadeel and Bank Maur are talented horses on the up – all resume here.

Manfred Stakes 2023 Runner by Runner

1. Jacquinot

Resumes off the back of a terrific spring campaign.  Won the Group 1 Golden Rose before running well in the Everest.  Has won two recent jump outs and is clearly the one they have to beat on exposed form.

2. Maximillius

Worked to the lined solidly first up in an easier race.  Has fitness on his side and gets the services of Blake Shinn.

3. Bank Maur

Was very good finishing second this track and trip first up last prep.  Was beaten less than 2 lengths in the Caulfield Guineas two runs later and the most recent jump out was very nice.  Strong each way claims with even luck in running.

4. Watadeel

Was terrific breaking his maiden first up at Geelong last prep, then ran really well in a Carbine Club on Derby Day.  Might be looking for a touch further than this but he is certainly one to keep an eye on this autumn.

5. Angry Skies

Resumes.  Did some solid things in his first prep and the recent jump out was solid.  Multiples.

6. Merry Mac Boy

Not beaten far here first up.  This is harder, however he has fitness on his side and the advantage of racing on speed.

7. Mighty Sapphire

Had the right run to break maiden at Cranbourne last start.  This is a big step up.

8. Sir Torobeel

Needs further.

9. Ruthless Dame

Unbeaten filly trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.  Won a maiden on debut then a Group 3 over 1200m up the Flemington straight.  Has jumped out well and could end up with the run of the race from barrier 8 with Jamie Kah in the saddle.

10. Climbing Star

Resumes in second preparation.  Another who broke their maiden impressively last prep before running second at Group 2 level.  She has as much upside as any of these.

11. Royal Merchant

Has been tackling easier assignments in Sydney.  Respecting the stable (Maher & Eustace) but I doubt she has the class to be winning here.
