The Hannan’s Handicap is a Listed race held at Kalgoorlie over 1400 metres. It is for horses three-years-old and upwards and is run under handicap conditions. The total prize money this year is $150,000.

There are 11 runners for the 2024 TabTouch Hannans Handicap with 10 geldings and a stallion. There are two 5YOs, four 6YOs, two 7YOs, two 8YOs and one 9YO. Three runners had their last start in a BM 84+ race over 1600m at Belmont on 21st September (won by Rokanori), two in the Tom Sayers Memorial Sprint over 1300m at Kalgoorlie on 22nd September (won by Colossal), two in the Nicopolis Stakes over 1200m at Belmont on 14th September (won by Man Crush) and two in the Listed  Farnley Stakes over 1400m at Belmont on 7th September (won by Saloon Bar), while the rest came via different races. Four of them have raced at Kalgoorlie before but only Staralign has won there. Trainer Peter Fernie has 2 runners.

The early favourite is Man Crush who placed at his first 3 runs this preparation before winning the Nicopolis Stakes. Second favourite is Vast Art who ran 0.5 length 4th in the Farnley before being slowly away and unsuited by the tempo when 2 lengths 5th over 1600m last start. Third favourite is Ginger Baker who finished 3rd in the Farnley Stakes second-up. Sentimental Hero finished 0.5 length 3rd in the Tom Sayers Memorial Sprint, while River Rubicon ran 2nd to Rokanori last outing. The other runners are currently $14 or longer.

Last-start winner over 1600m at Belmont where he controlled the race. Can make his presence felt again.

Returns from an 8 week let-up. Ran 4th over 1400m at Belmont last start. Not the worst.

Runner-up at Broome at his last 2 starts. This is harder.

8. Sentimental Hero (5)

One of 2 runners for Peter Fernie (the other is Staralign). Finished 0.5 length 3rd in the Tom Sayers Memorial Sprint over 1300m at Kalgoorlie on 22nd September where he was held up at times. Strong claims.

This 9YO is the oldest runner in the race this year and is the only runner in the race to have won at Kalgoorlie. He has  7 wins and 7 places from 19 starts here and was a close runner-up in the Tom Sayers Memorial Sprint last outing. Don’t dismiss.

10. Vast Art (6)

Ran 0.5 length 4th in the Farnley before being slowly away and unsuited by the tempo when 2 lengths 5th over 1600m last start. One of the main chances here.

11. Weaponson (2)

Finished last in the Farnley. Wait for him to show some form.
