Race 8 at Moonee Valley on Saturday 22 August 2020 is the Listed Carlyon Stakes.

The Carlyon Stakes is a 1200 metre set weights and penalties race run by the Moonee Valley Racing Club. It is held during August.

Track Prediction: Heavy Weather: Showers

At the time of writing this article there is field of 9 runners set to take their place in what looks to be a very competitive race. We do need to tread carefully with the rail out 5 metres and plenty of rain predicted in Melbourne on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The early favourite is the very impressive Moonee Valley winner from 3 weeks ago, Brooklyn Hustle. On the next line of betting is the old war horse Jungle Edge and it is not a surprise to see he has already been well backed with rain predicted. The ever consistent Great Again and Bons Away are the other horses under double figures.

There are three more runners between the $12-1 and $20-1 mark – these being Witherspoon, Humma Humma and Dollar for Dollar. All carry top class Melbourne jockeys. Ashlor and Fine Dane are the rank outsiders.

Alfa Oro was scratched on Thursday morning which is significant for two reasons. The first being that he was well in the market and the second is he was one of the speed runners. I still foresee good speed with a number of go forward horses in this race.

1. Jungle Edge (10)

He is fast becoming one of the most well known horses in Australia and has brought so much joy to the Mick Bell stable, punters and his legion of fans. The scratching of Alfa Oro helps his chances as he now should be able to follow Witherspoon across and find the outside lead position – a position that he loves. It goes with out saying the more rain the better for him!

2. Great Again (1)

The 8 year old just keeps racing really well. With good speed in the race he could end up getting a really nice sit in behind and we know he handles the ground. Sure to be there abouts.

3. Ashlor (6)

Was a good winner at his most recent start at Moonee Valley – that was three runs ago. He should get a really nice run in transit but he is probably not talented enough to be winning a race like this.

4. Dollar For Dollar (3)

First up and short of his best distance but he is a competitive group 1 horse on his day. Won a strong Flemington jump out that featured Age of Chivalry and Tofane. Unproven on heavy ground but has performed well on the soft tracks. $16 looks overs.

5. Bons Away (8)

This race could end up setting up well for a horse like Bon’s Away. He is a get back runner that always flashes home and he likes this track. My biggest knock on him is he has seemingly forgotten how to win so at single figures I couldn’t entertain but definitely worth consideration for multiples.

6. Fine Dane (5)

I have seen worse $50-1 shots. Another one of these horses who should get a nice run in behind a good speed. Jump out was good, has a good first up record and is proven at Moonee Valley. Knock out.

7. Alfa Oro (7) – SCRATCHED

8. Humma Humma (4)

Always need to respect the Mott / McCardle combination. 2 from 2 track and distance and she is a super consistent mare. There has to be question marks on whether she is going to handle a heavy track. She is yet to run on a heavy but has been in the placings just 1 time from 5 goes on soft tracks.

9. Witherspoon (9)

This speed machine comes down from Sydney for astute trainer Kris Lee’s. She has been racing well up there and has no issue in handling the going. I do question whether she quite has the talent to be beating a field like this.

10. Brooklyn Hustle (2)

This years early favourite was superb first up when he showed arrogance in taking care of a field with far less talent than him. I am mindful that trainer Jason Warren said there was a stack of improvement in him too. Jockey Dwayne Dunn was able to produce a master ride first up and he will need to do the same again here as he is likely going to be last again on the fence.
