The race was first held in 1985 as the Royal Parma Stakes over 1500 metres at Rosehill and was won by a horse called Bring Home. The following year it became a Listed race. It was called the Caravan Stakes in 1992, the Concept Sports Stakes in 1998 and the Allied Express Stakes in 2005.. It was run over 1300 metres from 2001 to 2003 , in 2006 and from 2008 to 2009. In 2010 it was moved to Randwick where it was run over 1600m and was given the current name of Doncaster Prelude. In 2011 it was upgraded to the current Group 3 status then in 2014 it returned to the original home of Rosehill and the original distance of 1500m.

Normally it is raced on Tancred Stakes day as part of a super Saturday with 8 Group races. In 2022 the meeting was abandoned after race 3 and the remaining Group races, including this, were held at Newcastle the following Monday.
