The race was first held in 2001 and was won by a horse called Red Pepper. It is the youngest of Hong Kong’s 12 Group 1 races. In 2005 it was opened to international entries and in 2007 it became a Group 1 race.

It is held on the same day as the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup over 2000m and the Chairman’s Sprint Prize over 1200m.
