2020 Melbourne Cup Preview & Tips:

Track: Good   Weather: Fine

A full field of 24, including four mares, will line up for the $7,750,000 2029 Lexus Melbourne Cup. Danny O’Brien has four runners, Ciaron Maher & David Eustace have three runners, Aidan O’Brien, Joseph O’Brien, Chris Waller and Anthony Freedman have two runners each. The betting is fairly open, as always, and early favouritism is shared between two of the international raiders that are both trained by Aiden O’Brien – Anthony Van Dyck who showed his class with a fighting 2nd in the Caulfield Cup at his first Australian start, and Tiger Moth who has only had 4 starts and is very lightly weighted. Third favourite in the early markets is Sir Dragonet who won the Cox Plate at his Australian debut.

Surprise Baby has only raced twice since running 0.9 lengths 5th in last years Melbourne Cup and has genuine claims. Prince Of Arran is back in Australia for his third tilt at the Melbourne Cup, He finished 3rd in 2018 and 2nd in 2019 and comes off 4th in the Caulfield Cup and is one of the real chances. Verry Elleegant has won more prizemoney than any other runner and has won three Group 1 races, including the Caulfield Cup, from four starts this preparation. She is in with a chance but has a big weight to carry for a mare. Russian Camelot look as if the distance won’t trouble him and has to be considered. Finche ran 4th in 2018 and 7th last year and looks as good as he ever has. All other runners are currently 20 to 1 or longer, including last year’s winner Vow And Declare, Geelong Cup winner Steel Prince and Sydney Cup winner Etah James.

As always there are many hopes in the Cup and a long price has never stopped a horse from winning.
