Champion trainer Chris Waller saddles up Hinged, a three year old daughter of Worthy Cause, in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas. She ran a terrific second in the Group 1 Flight Stakes at Randwick last start which looks a superior form line to the Melbourne lead up races. Expect there to be good pace on here and she is drawn perfectly in barrier nine to sit off them and be given her chance to run home over the top by leading hoop Damian Lane. If the expected rain is to hit then I think that only increase her chances.
Five year old gelding trained on the track by John Moloney. His recent form around Ayrton and Elephant this course/distance reads well for this and he can handle both wet and dry surfaces. Expect him to roll forward and find the lead from barrier five. May take some catching!
Rhinoceros is currently rated a $4.40 chance in the opening race on the card. He used a significant rail bias to win at Moonee Valley last start and meets a key rival – Capital Legend – worse off at the weights in this. Was happy to be against him here.
Best bet – Race 9 # 1 Cristal Breeze Keen on this 6yo who is third-up in a much easier race. He was entered for a race up here last week, but from memory they scratched because of a sticky draw. They haven’t fared any better here as they’ve come out with the widest barrier this time. However, the map reads ok as he can come across with likely leader Barney’s Law drawn just inside him. He could sit outside the lead or one-out, one-back. His form in Sydney just looks
