The race was first run over 6 furlongs (about 1200m) in 1930 and was won by a horse called Pavilion ridden by M. McCarten. In 1980 the distance was reduced to 1000m, increased to 1100m in 2006, then increased to the current 1400m distance in 2015 when it was won by Ninth Legion.
