The French Open is the second of
the four Grand Slam tournaments and is held at the famous Roland Garros
stadium which is located in Paris. The tournament runs for two weeks and
is usually held in mid to late May. The French Open began as a national
tournament in 1891 so it has well over one hundred years of rich sporting
tradition to it's name.
The French Open at Roland Garros in Paris is the only Grand Slam event that plays it's matches on a clay court. This can be quite a challenge for the players as this type of playing surface alters the ball's bounce and pace when compared to the hardcourt or grass surfaces. As this is a difficult surface to master, over the years there have been an emergence of clay court specialists with many of the high ranked players struggling and being knocked out of the competition in the early rounds.
