The Super League is the only full-time professional rugby league competition in the northern hemisphere.

The league began in March 1996 and 11 of the 12 teams are based in Great Britain. They are the Bradford Bulls, Harlequins RL, Huddersfield Giants, Hull FC, Hull Kingston Rovers, Leeds Rhinos, Salford City Reds, St. Helens RFC, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors.

France fields the 12th team and is represented by the Les Catalans Dragons. The Dragons joined the Super League in 2006. The Paris (France) Saint German team was one of the original Super League clubs but dropped out after two years of competition.

Super League XII is the official name of the 2007 season. The 12 teams each play 27 games, including the Millennium Magic round and five additional fixtures, from February to September. They play each other twice in a home and away series. At the end of the 27 rounds the top six teams advance to the playoffs that finishes with the Grand Final.

The team finishing in last place will be relegated to the National League One unless the Les Catalans Dragons finish on the bottom, in which case the team ending up in 11th place will by relegated. The Dragons are exempt from relegation in 2007.

The Hull Kingston Rovers will be playing in the Super League for the first time after being promoted from the National League One in 2006.

St. Helens defeated Hull FC, 26-4, to win the 2006 championship. In addition to 2006, St. Helen’s has claimed three other Grand Finals: 1999, 2000 and 2002. The Bradford Bulls own three championships: 2001, 2003 and 2005.
