Apache Cat is a strong favourite for the $650,000 Group 1 Carlton Draught Doomben 10,000 on Saturday.
There is a field of 12 for the weight-for-age race over 1350 metres, and Apache Cat has been cleared to run following the result of blood tests. Apache Cat has won his last 4 starts, but the last three have been over 1200 metres, which many say is his best distance.
The Albury gelding Helideck has won his last 3 starts over distances of 1300-1400 metres and looks to have a hope in this.
The South Australian mare Vormista came second to Apache Cat at her last start and the longer distance would appear to suit her. In addition she has Damien Oliver as her jockey, and he is in great Group 1 form at the moment, and has won a Doomben 10,000 before aboard Falvelon in 2002.
The three year old filly Tan Tat de Lago has history against her, as no three year old filly has ever won the Doomben 10,000. Last year this race was won by Takeover Target.
